Our main research aim was to provide with a representative picture of changes, impacts and determinants that, through the physical flows (energy for residential purposes, energy for transport, and food), constitute most of resources use by the households. The theoretical approach adopted is based on Ecological Economics. Briefly, from this approach the Economy is a biosphere subsystem and, as a consequence, sustainability can be understood as its scale within it. To measure the scale of the economy, in this particular case the household as an economic unit, the household metabolism is used. Therefore, the accountancy of material and energy flows associated to households and the outputs (emissions, losses, wastes), either direct (from consumption) and indirect (from requirements used to the production of goods and services), or even the footprints (carbon and water). To this purpose, a consumption-based approach has been adopted, i.e., the responsibility for all requirements and impacts from the product consumed are attributable to the consumer. Households are conceived here as the main unit of consumption. Contrary to other works, in this study direct physical and socio-economic information data have been obtained from microdata available within the Spanish Household Budget Survey. These data have been treated and used together with life cycle analysis information, for the calculation of the indirect flows, losses and wastes coefficients, and footprint coefficients, for the calculation of the food intake impacts. All this work has been carried out by using the national and regional levels. After a comprehensive review of literature on household metabolism, the energetic level associated to household consumption has been analysed in detail. On one hand, the energy services associated with household consumption (light, appliances, heat, etc.); on the other hand, the use of fuels to private vehicles. At the same time, this work reflects on the material dimension of the household functioning, which can be associated with different goods and services acquired and used by the different household members, and particularly our work is focused on the food consumption. All these pieces are linked to build a summary of the Spanish household metabolism at the regional level, taking into account the input of energy and food, and the output of losses, wastes, and emissions, as well as the different impacts. Furthermore, an analysis of the main determinants of energy and food consumption has been elaborated, covering the 2008 economic crisis period.
