In its beginnings it was conceived as a composition in which Baroque and Preclassical elements and procedures were integrated, applying the concertante principle to all the instruments of the Romantic orchestra. Throughout the 20th century, and up to the present day, composers belonging to multiple aesthetic currents and diverse compositional languages have written works under this name, the content of which differs from the original approach. However, they are all linked to the fundamental principle of neoclassicism: to recover and revise traditional compositional formulas. This phenomenon is reproduced in Spain, and is studied and described through the analysis of the repertoire of works that are called «concerto for orchestra», and which have been premiered in professional circuits in this country at the beginning of the 21st century (2001-2014).The research is based on a cataloguing of the works premiered and disseminated nationally and internationally that meet these requirements. In Spain, 11 works are identified, belonging to the following authors: Rogelio Groba, Jesús Villa Rojo, Agustín Charles, Antón García Abril, Ferrer Ferrán, César Cano, José Zárate, Eduardo Pérez Maseda, Pilar Jurado and Tomás Marco. The text is divided into three blocks that cover the entire study. The first deals with the background and origin of the "concerto for orchestra", and an investigation centred on the development of the category since the 20th century in the national and international sphere, carried out by means of the analysis of works representative of the stages it has gone through during this period. The second section presents the design and operation of an analytical methodology conceived for the repertoire under study, in which traditional analytical instruments (score study, listening, bibliographical review, etc.) are combined with digital tools oriented towards the evaluation of audio signals. These tools belong to MIRtoolbox and are implemented in Matlab, and offer quantitative and objective results that are graphically represented. Finally, the analytical methodology is applied to the eleven Spanish works, gathering the information and reflections derived in ten chapters (one for each author), which are identically structured, in order to facilitate their comparison and favour an overall view.
