After completing the training cycle of the first promotions of the Degree in Optics and Optometry of the University of Valladolid, it was considered pertinent to review the framework of professional competencies to optimize the training and employability of its future graduates.Hypothesis. The consultation with the agents involved in the academic and professional reality of the optometrist will identify, assess, and update the professional competencies that students must acquire during their university training in the Degree in Optics and Optometry at the University of Valladolid, as well as the most appropriate T-L strategies for their acquisition.Purpose. The aim of this study was identify and assess the professional competencies that optometrist must acquire during their undergraduate training at the University of Valladolid and the most appropriate T-L strategies for their acquisition and reach a consensus on the ideal level of importance they should have in university studies and comparing it with the level of importance they really have. Relate identified professional profile with the curriculum of the Degree in Optics and Optometry of the University of Valladolid.Methods. A three round Delphi study was carried out with the participation of a "useful sample" of 116 participants distributed in 7 panels. In Round 1, an open-ended questionnaire was applied to identify professional competencies and T-L strategies. In Rounds 2 and 3, closed-ended questionnaires were used to assess each item on two dimensions: Suitability and Reality. The existence of consensus and stability for the Suitability dimension was analyzed. The curricular deficit was analyzed as the difference between the dimension Reality and Suitability.Results. We identified and assessed 81 items (56 professional competencies and 25 T-L strategies) relevant to the training of optometrist, some of which are not included in the current curriculum. The suitability of 83% of the items was agreed: 77% of professional competencies, the most valued being those that correspond to the health functions of primary visual care, and 96% of T-L strategies, being the most valued those related to practical learning. In most of the items identified, a mild (58.02%) or severe (25.92%) curricular deficit was identified. The severe curricular deficit refers mainly to the professional competencies of levels 3 and 4 of the global WCO model and to T-L strategies of practical learning with real patients/clients.Conclusions. A catalogue of 56 professional competencies that all students should acquire during the Degree in Optics and Optometry, as well as the 25 suitable T-L strategies to acquire them, have been identified and assessed. The analysis of the assessments on the level of importance that each of the professional competencies and T-L strategies should have and the one they really have in the university training of the O-O have shown the existence of an imbalance between the studies of Degree in Optics and Optometry of the University of Valladolid and the professional profile of the optometrist currently required, providing relevant information for the review and updating of the curriculum and thus improving its adaptation to the current and future professional reality.
