This dissertation is primarily concerned with researching and exposing indetail the advantages and disadvantages that using the L1 in the foreign language classroom canbring for the students. To accomplish this goal, a thorough exploration of articles and thesisabout the beginning of this controversy and about the opinions and views of differentinvestigators has been developed. A historical overview of the topic, the advantages anddisadvantages of the use of L1 in the foreign language class and a revision of the reality in theclassrooms are studied in order to provide a clear vision of the topic. Finally, a set of activitiesincluding L1 will be given to exemplify how to introduce it in a real classroom.
