The chronological framework of our research extends from the beginning of the 17th century, when Calderón assumed patronage of the monastery, until the beginning of the 19th century, the time of the French invasion of the Iberian Peninsula and the end of the Old Regime.Rodrigo Calderón de Aranda, who was first Marquis of Siete Iglesias, Count of La Oliva, Commander of Ocaña of the Order of Santiago, Captain of the German Guard, Extraordinary Ambassador in Flanders, Secretary of the Chamber of Philip III, Perpetual Alderman of Valladolid, chief courier of that city, chief registrar and chief archivist of the Royal Court and Chancery of Valladolid, and above all, favorite of King Philip III's favorite: the Duke of Lerma; He acquired the patronage of Porta Coeli from Doña Mariana Cortés, its founder, at the beginning of the 17th century. She exercised it and made it hereditary by including it in her estate, in addition, and as the Duke of Lerma himself did in the Dominican monastery of San Pablo in Valladolid, she arranged for it to be his family pantheon. We are therefore facing a convent of noble patronage, the study of the figure of its patron, the founding process and the nuns who inhabited it will allow us to know the dynamics of this type of monasteries and delve deeper into the social, religious and economic reality of the city of Valladolid during the Modern Age.
