The emergence of free online machine translation systems has revolutionised the way society engages with translation, and nowadays, it is exceedingly common to encounter texts translated using these tools. One area where this change is particularly evident is tourism, encompassing all its facets. Undoubtedly, one of the most affected domains is gastronomic tourism, an area where it is increasingly common to see companies, especially small and medium-sized ones, as well as some organisations and institutions, choosing to use these tools to market their services and products to a broader international audience. However, we find that certain elements of natural languages continue to pose an obstacle to machine translation, and consequently, these provide limited results in terms of quality and adequacy that can lead to communication problems with international tourists. One of these potential obstacles lies in multiword units, highly prevalent phraseological elements characterised by the difficulty they pose when being translated due to their meaning often being derived from their social usage rather than the sum of their components. In this work, based on a sample of multiword units extracted from a corpus belonging to the field of gastronomic tourism, we analyse the resulting output offered by a selection of machine translation systems when transferring them from Spanish to English. We present the results obtained in order to verify the dysfunctions and determine to what extent does the linguistic transfer pose a problem for the normal development of the communicative act that translation represents, and the repercussions this may have on contemporary society.
