AB In contrast to the industrial agricultural systems aimed at producing unlabeled origin foodswithout unique characteristics, Multifunctional and Territorialized Agri-food Systems (MTAS) claimtheir identity in productions whose singularity comes from specific environmental conditions anddistinctive knowhow—factors often linked to tradition. Their systemic complexity goes beyond theagri-food production function (high quality, sustainable, and differentiated by origin) because theterritories gain cohesion and viability from the positive effects resulting therefrom: environmentalquality—in the context of sustainable agriculture based on practices that respect the environment andthe local productive vocation of the territories—, landscape value, greater economic diversification bystimulating integrated production chains, tourism potential, etc. In this context, the MTAS finds in thegeographical indication one of the most expressive quality reference formulas for the identification ofagri-food products. This paper delves into the regulatory nature of the main territorial indications(PDO, PGI) and explores their configuration and regulatory evolution, particularly focusing onthe wine geographical indications—the first and most common ones. The Spanish indications aretaken as the object of analysis, whose operational maturity reveals their solidity, but also theirinadequacies, with the demand for adjustments for greater flexibility in the regulatory frameworkthat identifies them as collective marks. Along the same lines, emphasis is placed on the recentadvance of individualistic PDO figures, which call into question the very collective basis of theterritorial trademark. These conceptual adaptations of geographical indications provide future linesof research necessary to interpret the coherence of these figures with the sustainable development ofthe territories, whose name they adopt to gain distinction and market competition.Frente a los sistemas agrícolas industriales orientados a la producción de alimentos de origen no etiquetado y sin características singulares, los Sistemas Agroalimentarios Multifuncionales y Territorializados (SATM) reivindicansu identidad en producciones cuya singularidad procede de unas condiciones medioambientales específicas y de unos saber hacer-factores distintivos a menudo ligados a la tradición. Su complejidad sistémica va más allá de la función de producción agroalimentaria (de calidad, sostenible y diferenciada según el origen), ya que los territorios ganan cohesión y viabilidad gracias a los efectos positivos que se derivan de ella: calidad medioambiental -en el contexto de una agricultura sostenible basada en prácticas respetuosas con el medio ambiente y la vocación productiva local de los territorios-, valor paisajístico, mayor diversificación económica al estimular cadenas de producción integradas, potencial turístico, etc. En este contexto, el MTAS encuentra en la indicación geográfica una de las fórmulas de referencia de calidad más expresivas para la identificación de los productos agroalimentarios. Este trabajo profundiza en la naturaleza normativa de las principales indicaciones territoriales (DOP, IGP) y explora su configuración y evolución normativa, centrándose especialmente en las indicaciones geográficas vitivinícolas, las primeras y más comunes. Se toman como objeto de análisis las indicaciones españolas, cuya madurez operativa revela su solidez, pero también sus insuficiencias, con la exigencia de ajustes para una mayor flexibilidad del marco normativo
