AB Public transport is a facilitator for the development of skills and social participation for all people. It plays a fundamental role in many aspects of our daily lives, facilitating access to employment, education, healthcare, leisure, or tourism activities.Transport is therefore a prerequisite for full participation in society. However, mobility limitations due to transport barriers can lead to social exclusion, with people with disabilities being one of the most affected groups. In Spain, 4.38 million people have some form of disability, the majority being physical. The lack of accessibility in public transport is an obstacle that prevents their full participation in all aspects of life.This study presents a methodology to assess the accessibility of public transport for people with physical disabilities and/or mobility impairments from the perspective of user autonomy and safety, integrating people with physical disabilities in the definition, verification and validation processes. A questionnaire has been designed to collect critical and non-critical requirements to analyze train stations, bus stops and taxi ranks.The questionnaire and methodology has been applied in two representative cities of Castilla y León representing different urban contexts, assessing through field observations the degree of accessibility of train stations, urban bus stops and taxi ranks. This has allowed the methodology to be validated, ensuring its replicability in different environments and the comparability of results between cities, means of transport or even areas within a municipality.Despite the progress made in adapting public transport, not all accessibility requirements set out in current regulations, nor those considered necessary for independent and safe use by people with physical disabilities, are yet met. The results obtained have enabled the identification of areas requiring attention and the formulation of recommendations to policy makers, transport operators and other stakeholders.This research has shown the need for regular accessibility audits of transport infrastructure to monitor progress or prioritise investment. The participation of people with disabilities in these processes should be ensured.
