Its purpose is to broaden the understanding of this prominent figure in the contemporary Spanish artistic sphere, exploring its connections with the past through his musical creativity, and offering an analysis with potential applicability to other repertoires and similar composers.Bernaola's approach to music as a dialogue with the past transcends the simple identification of previous influences; it delves into the conception of these new meanings as links between the past and the present. This dialogue becomes an intrinsic component of the creative process in contemporary music, where Bernaola incorporates elements from previous works that acquire new nuances in different contexts. The focus of this research is on works that allow for the exploration of intertextuality, especially those from the post-1980s period, although earlier stages are also considered to trace an evolution in the analysis. The aim is to establish connections between the composer's life and his various creative stages within their historical and cultural context to understand how these circumstances influenced his music. Additionally, an aesthetic evaluation of intertextuality in the studied repertoire is conducted, analyzing expressive and communicative intentionality. The analysis of the works is primarily based on the original scores, using the concept of intertextuality, and a theoretical-analytical semiotic proposal, the paradigm of logostructure, which seeks to explore the processes generating meaning in music and to establish connections between it and the surrounding reality. The theoretical framework of the research is divided into three successive areas: musical postmodernism, intertextuality, and techniques that manifest intertextuality in the musical domain.Throughout Bernaola's various creative stages, a transformation in the relationship between intertextuality and the enveloping music is observed, evidencing a subtle yet discernible evolution. Each of these stages presents different intertextualcharacteristics, with the last exhibiting features associated with postmodernism, as described by theorists.
