AB In Galicia in the last quarter of the 20th century, jazz went from marginal music to a symbol of modernity and cosmopolitanism, about the new situation of the transition to democracy. During the 1970s and 1980s, this genre was integrated into Galician cultural life thanks to the proliferation of festivals, associations, and specific clubs. However, as cultural policies changed and new musical movements emerged, jazz lost relevance, changing its meaning and scope. Despite efforts to establish a "Galician jazz" scene, with its own spaces, media, and hybridizations, political guidelines and market trends hindered its consolidation in the 1990s. Through the study of periodicals, archival materials, sound and audiovisual recordings, and more than thirty interviews, this doctoral thesis shows the interactions of jazz with the complex identity constructions and political dynamics of Galicia, as well as its relations with other musical genres, during the transition and the first two decades of democracy.
