It examines the challenges faced in their translation and proposes solutions to overcome them. The research has been conducted following the theory of Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA), an emerging paradigm that studies the meaning of linguistic units in combination with extralinguistic resources such as images, gestures, actions, and other visual signs. The study focuses on the challenges of translating graphic novels into Russian, proposing solutions through a detailed analysis of the possibilities of the original text and its translated version. It adopts an approach based on intersemiotic translation, using tools and methods of multimodal discourse analysis to examine both linguistic and extralinguistic features, including images, handwriting, and other multimodal phenomena. This work considers specific translation difficulties and discusses the causes of interlinguistic conflicts. The term “graphic novel” is clarified, distinguishing it from other terms such as comic, cartoon, or comic book. In addition, translation strategies are defined, with special attention to extralinguistic elements and information added in the images. The study considers the concept of multimodality in relation to semiotics, exploring its application in translation and in the analysis of comics, advertising, soap operas, and graphic novels. The importance of the relationship between visual and written modalities is highlighted, and it is described how, through various operations, the original text is reconstructed in translation. The conclusions of the study underline the relevance of this approach to addressing theoretical and practical challenges of translation in general, as well as to linguistics and the practice of translation in particular.  YR 2024 FD 2024 LK https://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/71597 UL https://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/71597 LA spa NO Escuela de Doctorado DS UVaDOC RD 24-nov-2024
