AB Based on a sociopraxic perspective, that considers reality as constructed, this research analyzes the meanings of participation held by social actors in a community initiative: the SACUDE Municipal Complex, located on the outskirts of Montevideo, Uruguay. Employing qualitative and implicative methodologies a participatory and transdisciplinary investigation was conducted to develop a dialogic process of collective reflection and action.The research was driven by a power group —composed of a neighbors´ community, technical staff employed by the initiative, and the researcher— and unfolded in three main stages. In the first stage, the participatory process was (re)constructed and critically analyzed using documentary archives, interviews, and Social Creativity Meetings. As a result, a narrative was created that compiles the collective memories of participation.In the second stage, the discourses on participation that emerged from conversational devices with social actors were analyzed. Discursive positions were identified and subject to successive creative feedback, which enabled the co-theorization of participation. According to the discussion of outcomes, it is concluded that participation is a spiraled process involving different levels, starting from assistant participation and potentially evolving, through progressive participation, into committed participation. The third stage focused on projections. This thesis includes proposals to foster participation in the community initiative, as well as considerations that may be useful for other territorial participatory initiatives.The results of this research open up new meanings of participation, making the analysis of community participatory processes more complex. The study legitimizes citizen participation in public-community initiatives, contributing to the improvement of citizens' quality of life.
