The remarkable growth of this technique in recent years is revolutionising traditional manufacturing systems and has given rise to new structural challenges that Operations Management must address. At the operational level, the specific characteristics of additive manufacturing introduce new complexities that necessitate a revision of traditional production planning and demand management systems. This doctoral thesis focuses on the study of production planning processes within the context of additive manufacturing and their interconnection with demand management systems for these components.Academic and scientific interest in the new operational challenges introduced by additive manufacturing has led to a proliferation of scientific publications in this field in recent years. However, a review of this literature has revealed the absence of frameworks that formalise the complete problem of production planning in additive manufacturing at the operational level. This work proposes a classificatory framework that establishes a reference for codifying, classifying, and analysing the main production planning and scheduling models in additive manufacturing. The study of the specificities of production planning in additive manufacturing has also enabled the identification of opportunities to improve efficiency in the market for components produced using additive manufacturing techniques. The research has focused on the allocation problem that arises between providers of additive manufacturing services and companies that outsource the production of these components. Given that additive manufacturing allows for the production of heterogeneous parts on the same manufacturing platform, suppliers can optimise their production capacity by simultaneously producing combinations of orders from different client companies. This scenario results in a combinatorial optimisation problem, which will be addressed using combinatorial auctions as a methodological tool. Following a detailed study of combinatorial auction mechanisms, this work develops an iterative combinatorial double auction to resolve the allocation and pricing problems in an additive manufacturing components market. The thesis presents both the theoretical formulation of the auction and the design of a formal model for its simulation, demonstrating how this mechanism contributes to improving allocation efficiency in an additive manufacturing market. The results of this research have highlighted the need to develop new mechanisms to efficiently address the complexities introduced by additive manufacturing in production planning systems and in the coordination between supply and demand. The ultimate aim of this work is to contribute to the maturation of additive manufacturing as a production technique and to the democratisation of its use.
