This creature, the fairy substitute of a kidnapped person, has been theorizedto have emerged due to high infant mortality rates and early explanations of disability.Furthermore, far from staying in the realm of fairy tales and fiction, the changeling has real-worldcounterparts and consequences that are well attested in the historical record. As such, it hasbecome one of the most written-about myths. However, and despite extensive analysis performedon such tales, little attention has been paid to the women in these: always present, yet rarelyvisible. In order to understand the roles played by women in changeling folktales and in folkloreat large, an analysis has been performed of a series of texts featuring these creatures with theobjective to better comprehend the manner in which folklore reflects the social realities andidiosyncrasies of Ireland.
