A quantitative analysisof results published in official statistics is provided, allowing more general conclusionsto be drawn about the two countries regarding English teaching methodology and theirstandings on an international scale of language proficiency. However, the lack ofnational statistics on English proficiency outcomes for primary school students in bothcountries limits the research, and the conclusions drawn must be based on partial dataand limited investigations. This issue reflects a general deficiency in the EU'seducational systems. The thesis highlights the need to collect and use national statisticson foreign language study so that the best-performing systems can serve as examples,ensuring that all EU students have access to the most effective learning methods.
