While initially rejected due to American practicality, writers quickly adapted Gothic literary aspects to fit their cultural traits. Edgar Allan Poe, a well-known American Gothic writer of the twentieth century, exemplifies this trend in his work “The Fall of the House of Usher”. In 2023, Mike Flanagan created a contemporary adaptation of the work as a Netflix series, which is based on the original work, but also references both other works by Poe and his own life. The aim of this essay is to explore how the American Gothic has been modified in a twenty-first century TV series, while showing how one short story by Poe is used as framework for his whole life and works.
