The Victorian Era is characterized by strict moral conduct as well as profound changes. These departures from the prevailing social order caused great anxiety amongst the population, reinforcing the traditional values. Focusing on gender and class issues, it can be argued that Hardy, aware of the inequalities and incongruities of said norms, employs different techniques to challenge those ideals in his novel. The author realistically depicts Victorian society, while subjecting his characters to distressing situations caused by the pressure of acting upon social demands. Likewise, his challenging of these conventions is conducted in a wisely and subtle manner.
