AB This dissertation aims to extend idea of dualism in novels beyond the traditional conception of it. By exploring the multifaced nature of dualism, this study seeks to develop an introduction to a broader literary theory that acknowledges the diverse manifestations and purposes of dualism within literature. Through a comprehensive analysis of selected novels, this research demonstrates that dualism operates as a multifunctional mechanism, influencing the characterization in diverse ways and the essence of the narrative. By examining the multiple representation of dualism across different levels – including but not limited to moral, identity, phycological and relational dimensions – this dissertation offers a general notion into the complex interaction between dualistic elements and the narrative.
