This dissertation is primarily concerned with providing a detailed description of the different advantages and disadvantages that the use of including the L1 in the FL classroom can offer to the learners. In order to do so, a thorough exploration of the different methodologies developed throughout history and their approach in relation to the use of the L1 has been carried out. Finally, a study regarding the students’ perspectives on the use of L1 Spanish in EFL (English as Foreign Language) teaching has been conducted in order to observe how it affects the students’ learning process, motivation, and confidence.
