The first empirical chapter analyses the relationship between parental divorce at different stages of childhood and children's university attainment in adulthood for the case of Spain, paying attention to the heterogeneity of this relationship according to parental education. The second empirical chapter investigates whether growing up in single-parent families is associated with more school absences, understanding the mechanisms behind this association and its variation according to adolescents' social background. The third empirical chapter explores the association between various family structures and early school leaving among adolescents in Spain, examining whether this relationship varies by parental education. The results of this thesis indicate that experiencing parental divorce during childhood, especially in early childhood and adolescence, is associated with a lower probability of attaining university studies in adulthood. Furthermore, growing up in non-traditional families is associated with greater disadvantages in terms of absenteeism and early school leaving. One of the main mechanisms which explain these disadvantages is the lower availability of socioeconomic resources in single-parent families, which is a key factor in the negative outcomes, at least in terms of absenteeism and early school leaving. However, the main contribution of this thesis has been to note the relevance of these results from the perspective of social stratification: the penalty of parental divorce on the achievement of university studies is greater for children of parents with a high educational level; whereas, in terms of absenteeism and school absence, the greatest penalty for growing up in non-traditional families is observed in adolescents whose parents have a lower educational level. These results suggest that, while growing up in non-traditional family structures may negatively affect academic performance, these effects are variable depending on the combination of social background, children's age and the type of educational outcome assessed.
