Initially, isolated experiments were conducted to explore different applications of the steam engine, invented by James Watt. In Great Britain, France, and the United States, significant advances were made, culminating in the creation of the first operational steamship, designed by the American inventor Robert Fulton in 1806. However, it was in Great Britain that the development of steam navigation achieved the efficiency and economic sustainability necessary for its global expansion. As a result, Britain emerged as a dominant commercial power, controlling the seas and establishing itself as a true naval empire. One of the key witnesses to this transformation was Lloyd's Register, the first naval registration company, which remains in operation today. Its yearbooks documented the gradual adoption of steamships in the British market and, later, across Europe. Initially, due to the freshness of the new technology, its cost and reliability, it was gradually incorporated into the market, becoming only a complement to commercial fleets, which were mostly equipped with sailboats. It was not until the mid-19th century that steamships began to feature more prominently in the company's yearbooks. This new technology was also gradually embraced by the leading military fleets of the world, forcing naval powers to adapt their strategies and tactics accordingly. In the early decades of the 19th century, European warships were the primary beneficiaries of this technological edge, gaining an advantage over nations with weaker militaries.
