This work responds to the need to understand collocations not only as a relevant linguistic phenomenon, but also as a significant challenge in the learning and teaching of Spanish as a foreign language.To achieve this purpose, the research is structured around four main objectives. First, we propose to review and systematize the main conceptions of the term collocation in the different currents of study, which allows us to identify theoretical divergences and bring conceptual clarity to a term that often presents overlaps and ambiguities. Secondly, an exhaustive analysis of Spanish verb-nominal combinations in use, which can be considered collocations, is carried out in order to provide a descriptive and functional study of these lexical units. The third objective is to delimit and characterize precisely the phenomenon of verb-nominal collocations in Spanish, taking into account their semantic, formal and combinatorial characteristics. Finally, the thesis proposes theoretical didactic proposals for the teaching of collocations in contexts of learning Spanish as a second language.From the methodological point of view, this research adopts a non-statistical approach. Collocations are approached as syntagmatic combinations that present some kind of specific restriction, whether semantic, formal or combinatorial. In this way, the study moves away from the purely quantitative paradigm to focus on the description and qualitative analysis of collocations.For the development of the analysis, a large corpus was compiled, composed of samples extracted from the written press, specifically from magazines. The analysis of the combinations extracted was carried out according to four fundamental dimensions. First, semantic aspects analyze how the meaning of collocations is configured. Compositionality (whether the meaning is derived from the individual components) and idiomaticity (whether it acquires a global meaning) are studied. It is also examined whether any of the components acquire a figurative meaning. Secondly, the formal fixedness of collocations, i.e. their degree of grammatical and syntactic flexibility, is studied. Transformation tests are applied to determine the stability of the combinations. Third, specific combinatorial constraints between collocational elements are examined. The fourth section addresses frequency and strength of association, two key features in statistical streams. Although the study does not adopt a quantitative approach, this aspect is analyzed using Sketch Engine and its Word Sketch functionality. The tool allows to calculate the frequency of co-occurrence and the strength of association between words using the logDice metric. Finally, a cross-linguistic comparison of the collocations of the corpus with English, French, Italian and Japanese is performed. The aim is to determine whether the combinations present lexical equivalences in these languages.
