A Case Study A1 Filardo Llamas, Laura A1 Roldán García, Alba K1 figurative language, community of practice, gender identities, Tumblr, metaphor, metonymy, schema, ambient affiliation AB This paper explores how group and individual identity are constructedon social media, and it looks specifically at the role of figurative language in thisprocess. It also acknowledges the idiosyncrasy of Tumblr, which is characterizedby its users’ unique lexicon and its peculiar post and identity labelling system (Oakley2016). Based on previous research on conceptual metaphor (Hart 2008, Charteris-Black 2004, among others), this study seeks to understand the effect of frame activationin the construal of gender and its role in the construction of intersubjectiveidentities for the creation of (fluid) social groups. This research follows a qualitative,corpus-based analysis, in which three types of figurative language were distinguished:metonymy, metaphor and cultural frames (Dancygier & Sweetser 2014; Kövecses2017). As shown in the results, the use of figurative language counteractsprior binary conceptions of gender, erasing previous boundaries. Furthermore, examplesinvolve intertextual and interdiscursive references, hence creating interpersonalrelations via shared ambient affiliation PB De Gruyter SN 978-3-11-100125-8, 978-3-11-100136-4 YR 2024 FD 2024 LK https://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/76003 UL https://uvadoc.uva.es/handle/10324/76003 LA eng NO Romano, Manuela (ed).
