AB This dissertation studies one of the most emblematic and relevant expressions of recent popular music, indie rock, from the perspective of gender studies, identity, performance, and sound technologies. The analysis spans from the 1990s, when independent music gained significant prominence in Spain, to the second decade of the 21st century. Thus, some of the most representative bands in Spain and their relationships with the international scene will be analyzed, particularly Anglo-Saxon indie rock, the Riot Grrrl movement, grunge, alternative rock, and Britpop. Furthermore, far from exemplifying a unitary vision of indie rock, the changes in its conception over the last decades have been studied through the groups that have produced music under this label, their audiences, the media, and other genres that have shared spaces and contributed to its signification process. The main objective is to study how gender issues have mediated indie rock in Spain, as well as to examine how notions of gender have affected both the musical expressions of indie rock and the daily experiences of its performers, to provide visibility to indie rock bands that are not always recognized or whose image has been distorted by gender stereotypes, and, in general, to explore the capacity of popular music to articulate identities and ideologies in recent Spain. Additionally, another important aspect is the analysis of the sonic construction of indie rock, a dimension frequently neglected in the study of popular music. On the other hand, the changes produced in music distribution with the rise of digital platforms and social networks will be examined, as well as the new configuration of the artistic persona through them.
