Through a historical-social study, the dissertation examines the main stages of migration that the United Kingdom has undergone from the Industrial Revolution to Brexit. However, the study goes further by exploring the way how cinema and literature represent migration by analysing the novel Exit West by Mohsin Hamid and the film Dirty Pretty Things by Stephen Frears. The dissertation analyses the way both works address migration through illegal migration, the identity of their characters, solidarity among peers, and the invisibility of the migrant, allowing us to understand migration as a multidimensional phenomenon that involves physical displacement, personal transformation, and the search for belonging.
