Its success led to the release of a number of cinematic adaptations over the years. The first of these happened just four years after its publication: The Haunting, directed by Robert Wise. This dissertation highlights the similarities and differences drawn between the novel and its 1963 cinematic adaptation, answering the question of how the film translates Jackson's original and innovative message into cinematic language and to what extent it remains faithful to it. For this, the director's choices and the techniques he used are analyzed side by side with the original text as well as the changes and modifications in the story.
