By teaching English as a foreign language, students are offered a unique opportunity to learn about other ways of seeing the world. This paper presents a didactic unit based on Irish folklore and W.B. Yeats’ poem The Stolen Child (1886), with the aim of fostering intercultural awareness in 2nd year of E.S.O. students. Through poetry, pupils are invited to reflect on the emotions, symbols and values belonging to Irish traditions. This unit turns the classroom into a space for emotional expression and cultural curiosity. Drawing on the author’s experience of living in Sligo, Ireland, the materials used in this innovative proposal offer the student an authentic and meaningful contact that brings the classroom to the green fields of Ireland.
