Through the close reading and analysis of “The Stowaway” and “Parenthesis" with established postmodern theories, this paper reveals how Barnes employs fragmentation, metafiction, intertextuality and unreliable narrators. The findings demonstrate how the novel’s deconstruction of linear narratives and objective realities serve to dismantle grand narratives and question universal truths. The study demonstrates that the novel is an accessible entry point to postmodern literature. Ultimately, this dissertation concludes that Barnes’s A History of the World in 10½ Chapters stands as a postmodern novel that invites the reader to question the veracity of history and construct meaning from multiple perspectives.
