RT info:eu-repo/semantics/bookPart T1 The Late Republican legionary fortress at Cáceres el Viejo (Cáceres, Spain). Q. Caecilius Metellus’ strategic axis against Sertorius A1 Morillo, Ángel A1 Pereira, Carlos AB Since the efforts of A. Schulten and R. Paulsen at the legionary fortress of Cáceres el Viejo (Cáceres, Spain) in the 1920s, this settlementhas had a significant impact on military knowledge. Schulten’s proposals sparked a controversy concerning Roman military actionsin this area, matching this camp to the Castra Caecilia. Later, G. Ulbert conducted a more extensive analysis of the artefacts recovered, but he was also unable to provide a precise chronology. After several years, advances in knowledge of artefacts and Roman militarysubjects in general justify returning to this important settlement. For that reason, we made a complete study of the material collection, housed in three different institutions: the Museum of Cáceres, the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum, and the ArchäologischeStaatssammlung München. This work allows us to increase the volume of artefacts known, deepen the legionary camp knowledge, andbetter understand the strategy of the initial times of the Sertorian War. Here we present some of the results already obtained, advancingsome outcomes about the chronology, the castrametation techniques, the military supplies (imports and local productions), and theorigin of the troops. Equally important for this military site is its incorporation into a precise historical and military narrative.
