AB To offer one and accurate Latin version of the holy Bible was a very difficult task because of many reasons. An important problem was that a higher degree of literality was required, and this requirement collided with the Greek and Roman literary tradition, which enphatically refused the translation uerbatim. Besides of that, a literal translation could hardly avoid the formal roughness of the text (also against the Greek and Roman literary taste) and its internal incongruities. By means of a special device, the tropology, St. Jerome tried to keep literality and avoid formal roughness or internal incongruities offering a third and true level of comprehending the text. Hebrew proper names were a big help for achieving his purpose.
