RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Sobre el origen, sentido y trascendencia de la "Historia de la Lengua Española" (1942-1981) de Rafael Lapesa A1 Martín Zorraquino, María Antonia A2 Ediciones Universidad de Valladolid K1 Filología hispánica AB In this paper, the reasons that determined the publication of Rafael Lapesa's Historia de la Lengua Española (HLE), in 1942, are carefully analysed. The sense and, above all, the significance of Lapesa's book are also studied: the HLE was really relevant for the studies of Hispanic Philology under Franco' s system, since it was not only (and still it is) a very valuable history of Spanish language (submitted in a single volume including the complete evolution of this language till the present time), but it also constituted an eloquent evidence of a particular way of understanding History, the history of language and, more specifically, the history of Spanish language, at a crucial moment in Spain's life. In writing the HLE, Lapesa took on a scientific and moral commitment of significant value within the historical and political circumstances in which he found himself, and, in publishing it, he brought about very beneficial cultural (social and educational) repercussions for the Spanish generations of the postwar period: the HLE represented the continuity of the Escuela Española de Filología (Spanish School of Philology), founded by Ramón Menéndez Pidal. On the other hand, Lapesa's attachment to positivism, beyond theoretical renovating ambitions, justifies the permanent validity of his work.
