One of the key components of translation competence is the so-called bilingual subcompetence (Pacte 2005; Kelly 2002) and, as a part of this, competence in the mother tongue, essential for translator trainees (García Izquierdo et al. 1999). However, in recent years there is evidence of a gradual deterioration in trainees’ use of their mother tongue in Spain. This paper presents the results of a pilot study conducted on first-year students of Translation and Interpreting, the purpose of which was to detect the main errors made by these students in their mother tongue, typify them and try to understand their origins, with the ultimate goal of preventing their occurrence by means of activities designed for classroom use.
Uno de los componentes fundamentales de la llamada competencia traductora es la subcompetencia bilingüe (PACTE 2005; Kelly 2002) y, como parte de esta, la competencia en lengua materna, fundamental para los traductores en formación (García Izquierdo et al. 1999). No obstante, en España se observa en los últimos años el deterioro progresivo en la utilización de esta. Por ello, en este artículo se exponen los resultados de un estudio piloto realizado con estudiantes de primer curso de Traducción e Interpretación, cuya finalidad ha sido detectar los errores fundamentales que cometen estos estudiantes en su lengua materna, tipificarlos e intentar comprender su origen, con el objetivo último de prevenirlos a partir de la propuesta de actividades de refuerzo específicas para el aula.
