El objetivo de este artículo es analizar la evolución operada, durante su más de medio siglo de historia, por la Alianza Atlántica. Esta organización ha pasado de ser un instrumento esencialmente militar y que actuaba dentro de los límites de los países miembros, a intervenir en misiones llamadas "fuera de área", así como otras no esencialmente militares. Durante esta evolución el Mediterráneo sur es el eje fundamental de estudio, valorando su importancia dentro de la estrategia defensiva de la Alianza Atlántica, desde su creación hasta nuestros días, sin olvidar el papel que España ha desempeñado en este proceso.
The objective of this article is to analyze the evolution that was carried out by NATO for more than half a century. This organization went from an essentially military instrument with a capacity of action within the boundaries of its country members into another with the ability of intervening in the so called "outside the lines" missions as well as in non strictly military ones. In my study of this evolution the focus will be the South Mediterranean area, and I will evaluate, from its origins to the present day, the importance of this area in the defensive strategy of NATO, without neglecting the role of Spain in this process.
