Este artículo resume dos discursos con idéntico título pronunciados en 1860 y en 1862 en la Universidad Central de Madrid, en los actos solemnes de investidura de dos Doctores en Medicina. En su exposición, los autores defienden la necesidad de fomentar la Educación Física de la infancia y la juventud. Para ello, inciden, por un lado, en los perjuicios causados por su inexistencia y, por otro, en los beneficios individuales y sociales que de ella se derivarían. La premisa básica de ambos discursos remite al asunto de la salud de las poblaciones, al peligro de la ociosidad-sedentarismo urbano y a la degeneración de la raza.
This paper summarizes two speeches with exactly the same title given in the investiture ceremony of two Doctors in Medicine that took place in the Central University of Madrid in 1860 and 1862. In their presentation, the speakers advocate the promotion of the Physical Education for the infancy and the youth. To do so, they emphasize the damages that derive from PE's present absence, and the individual and social benefits that its implementation would bring about. The underlying premise of both talks refers to the health of the populations problem, to the dangers of urban idleness and sedentarism, and to the degeneration of the physical stock
