Los periodistas ante el fenómeno terrorista. Decisiones profesionales y éticas en la cobertura de atentados

Abstract

El terrorismo es un problema político y social que se expande a nivel mundial propagando pánico y provocando un gran número de víctimas. Este hecho es noticia, y es labor del periodista cubrir estos sucesos con inmediatez una vez se han producido. El deber profesional y las decisiones éticas que toma el periodista del terrorismo suponen un conflicto al que se somete en cada una de las coberturas y tratamiento informativo. El principal objetivo de este trabajo es analizar si los periodistas son capaces de enfrentarse al terrorismo y asumir sus responsabilidades, superando así los conflictos a los que hacen frente. Para ello se realizan entrevistas a seis de los periodistas con más experiencia en la cobertura de sucesos terroristas, todos ellos de nacionalidad española pero que han trabajado sobre el terrorismo en otros países del mundo. Los resultados recogen datos muy variados y comunes entre todos ellos, permitiendo conocer de primera mano cómo se lleva a cabo la labor de estos profesionales. Las conclusiones revelan diferencias entre este tipo de periodistas y aquellos convencionales. El proceso productivo y el tratamiento informativo, así como las decisiones éticas y profesionales varían entre los periodistas entrevistados y los responsables de la comunicación que cubren otro tipo de temas periodísticos.

Terrorism is a social problem that expands globaly, spreading terror and provoking a huge number of victims. This issue is present in the news, and it is the journalists' job to cover these events as soon as they happen. The proffesional duty and the ethical decisions taken by the journalists specialized in terrorism become an issue when covering and processing information. The main target of this paper is to analize if journalists are capable of confronting terrorism and assume their responsabilities, overcoming the conflicts that they have to face. For this purpose interviews are performed to six experienced journalists in covering terrorism events and to a terrorism documentalist. All of them have Spanish nationality and they have worked on terrorism issues in other countries worldwide. The interviews gather up very diverse but also common results between them, allowing us to know firsthand how the job of these proffesionals is carried out. The conclusions reveal diferences between this type of journalists and the conventional ones. The productive process and the informative treatment, as well as the ethical and proffesional decisions, vary between the interviewed journalists and the reporting/media officers that cover all other types of journalistic topics.
