Banco Santander y BBVA, ¿vidas paralelas? (S.XIX-2017)

Abstract

La intermediación bancaria ha sido clave en la creación de empresas e industrias ya que solucionaban el problema de liquidez existente en el s.XIX. Este hecho fue el punto de partida de las entidades bancarias más importantes de España, BBVA y Banco Santander. Al observar en la actualidad el tamaño que tienen los dos bancos, me planteé la siguiente pregunta, ¿El Banco Santander y el BBVA han seguido estrategias similares? De esta forma analizamos los orígenes, las estrategias de integración con otras entidades financieras, las estrategias geográficas, o cómo han financiado las operaciones. Resulta fácil pensar que los dos bancos han llevado vidas paralelas, ya que pertenecen al mismo sector económico-financiero, pero a lo largo del análisis que realizaremos, veremos que las entidades han tomado decisiones diferentes para afrontar problemas similares.

Bank intermediation has been a key question in the creation of companies and industries since they solved problems on existing liquidity during the nineteenth century. That fact was the starting point of the most important banks in Spain, BBVA and Banco Santander. Looking at the current size of the two banks, I asked myself the following question: Have Banco Santander and BBVA followed similar strategies? In this way we analyze the origins, the strategies of integration with other financial entities, the geographical strategies, or how they have financed the operations. Firstly, it is easy to think that both banks have led parallel lives, since they belong to the same economic-financial sector, but throughout the analysis that we will perform, we will see that both entities have taken different decisions to face similar problems.
