Objetos de hormigón. La influencia wrightiana en la obra de Donald Judd

Abstract

Las creaciones escultóricas en hormigón que Donald Judd realizara desde principios de los setenta hasta su fallecimiento en 1994, suponen un intenso encuentro de materia y espacio, que sintetiza los valores del lugar en el que se integran y el profundo arraigo en la cultura americana. De esa manera, el presente artículo analiza, desde la revisión de esos objetos específicos, el origen e implicaciones de algunas de sus propuestas de hormigón, a travésdel estudio del planteamiento original del propio artista y de la documentación gráfica que posibilita su interpretación. A partir de ello, la reflexión se aborda desde una perspectiva que aúna arte y arquitectura de forma simultánea,y que conduce al descubrimiento de los mecanismos con los que Judd se impone en el territorio. Unos mecanismos que nacen del descubrimiento de una nueva espacialidad, desarrollada anteriormente por Frank Lloyd Wright con los proyectos residenciales realizados a partir de los años treinta. Así, podrá comprobarse cómo los objetos analizados de Donald Juddreproducen las geometrías y las disposiciones alternativas que empleaWright en sus viviendas, expresando una misma identidad americana que, en su caso, se materializa a través de la utilización del hormigón.

The sculptural concrete creations made by Donald Judd from the early seventies until his death in 1994, represent an intense encounter between matter and space, which synthesises the values of the place in which they are integrated and the deep roots of the American culture. Thus, this article analyses, not only the overview of those specific objects, but also the origin and implications of some of his concrete proposals. This analysis is carried out through the study of the original approach of the artist himself and the graphic documentation that enables its interpretation. Hence, the reflection is approached from a perspective which combines art and architecture simultaneously, and that leads to the discovery of the mechanisms with which Judd became famous in the territory. Mechanisms that result from the discovery of a new spatiality, previously developed by Frank Lloyd Wright with his residential projects that started in the thirties. Therefore, it can be seen how the analysed objects of Donald Judd reproduce the geometries and the alternative layouts that Wright used in his houses. They both expressed the same American identity, which, in Judd’s case, he materialises it with the use of concrete.
