El símbolo de una ciudad. Restitución virtual del Castillo Palacio de los Pimentel en Benavente

Abstract

El castillo de Benavente se construyó entre los siglos XII y XVI por la familia Pimentel y que en su apogeo fue uno de los más importantes y suntuosos alcázares de toda España. Con el paso del tiempo fue abandonado y un incendio acabó con gran parte de la fortaleza. Su situación estratégica lo convirtió en bastión utilizado por ambos bandos de la Guerra de la Independencia. Durante los últimos dos siglos se arruinó progresivamente hasta que, en la década de los setenta del siglo pasado, la única torre que aún se conservaba se aprovechó como elemento representativo del Parador de Turismo de la ciudad. Gracias a una publicación reciente en la que se reúnen los testimonios gráficos del castillo en diferentes épocas, y sobre todo a una planta del alcázar, ha sido posible realizar la restitución virtual del mismo, utilizando el dibujo como herramienta al servicio de la investigación.

Benavente’s Castle was built between the 12th and 16th centuries by the Pimentel family and at its peak was one of the most important and sumptuous fortresses in all of Spain. With the passage of time, it was abandoned, and a fire destroyed much of the fortress. Its strategic location made it a bastion used by both sides of the War of Independence. During the last two centuries it was progressively ruined until, in the 1970’s, the only tower that was still preserved was used as a representative element of the city’s Parador de Turismo. Thanks to a recent publication where the graphic testimonies of the castle at different times are gathered, and especially to a plan of the fortress, it has been possible to carry out the virtual restitution of it, using the drawing as a tool at the service of the investigation.
