La ruta canaria: el tratamiento mediático de la inmigración irregular a través de la prensa digital en España

Abstract

La migración irregular, entendida como la salida de personas de sus países de origen motivados por diferentes causas, es un fenómeno presente en todas las sociedades modernas. La representación mediática de la inmigración irregular a través de los medios de comunicación influye en el constructo social que tiene la población sobre el mismo. De esta manera, el objetivo del presente estudio es analizar el tratamiento informativo que recibe la inmigración irregular que llega a España, a través de la ruta canaria, en los mass media. Para ello, se recurre a una metodología fundamentada en el análisis de contenido, que se aplica en dos medios concretos: los diarios generalistas digitales El País y El Mundo, durante el periodo comprendido entre el 1 de enero al 30 de abril de 2021. Los resultados reflejan que, pese a que existe un avance en cuanto al tratamiento mediático de la inmigración en los discursos periodísticos, se sigue empleando encuadres y términos que generan estigmas y connotaciones negativas en torno a la migración.

Irregular migration, understood as the departure of people from their countries of origin motivated by different causes, is a phenomenon present in all modern societies. The media representation of irregular immigration through the media influences the social construct that the population has about it. In this way, the objective of this study is to analyze the informational treatment received by irregular immigration arriving in Spain, through the Canarian route, in the mass media. To do this, a methodology based on content analysis is used, which is applied in two specific media: the generalist digital newspapers El País and El Mundo, during the period from January 1 to April 30, 2021. The The results show that, although there is progress in the media treatment of immigration in journalistic discourses, frames and terms that generate stigmas and negative connotations around migration are still being used.
