El control social en Michel Foucault

Abstract

En los últimos siglos, la sociedad ha desarrollado diversos mecanismos para corregir aquellas conductas de los ciudadanos consideradas negativas a través del denominado control social. Vamos a realizar un recorrido histórico en torno a las principales técnicas de imposición del control anteriores al siglo XIX, y también aquellas que se desarrollaron tras esta centuria. Sobre ello escribió Michel Foucault, que en su obra Vigilar y Castigar analiza la importancia que el castigo sobre el cuerpo y la publicidad tenían en el derecho penal antes del siglo XIX para la imposición del control social. También analiza cómo a partir de este siglo el control social se impone en determinadas instituciones, tales como los colegios, las prisiones o los hospitales, a través de otro tipo de técnicas más discretas. Algunos de estos nuevos mecanismos son: la individualización de los sujetos, la imposición de la disciplina, y la implantación del examen como método de control rutinario.

During the last centuries, society has developed various mechanisms to correct negatively considered citizen behaviours through the socalled social control. We are going to take a historical tour regarding the main techniques used to impose control previous to the XIX century, and also those that were developed after said century. Michel Foucault wrote about this, and in his work Discipline and Punish he analyzes the importance that punishment on the body and publicity had in criminal law before 19th century for the imposition of social control. Furthermore, he analyses how from this century on social control is imposed in certain institutions, such as schools, prisons, or hospitals, through other kind of discrete techniques. Some of this mechanisms are: the individualization of subjects, the imposition of discipline, and the instalment of the exam as a routinary control method.
