Entre don Quijote y Guzmán anda el juego: los orígenes de la novela moderna

Abstract

Cuando se dice que el Quijote es la primera novela moderna, pocas veces se menciona que justo un año antes Mateo Alemán había publicado la primera parte del Guzmán Alfarache, una obra que ya se distanciaba sobremanera de la prosa de ficción que hasta el momento se conocía y que Cervantes leyó con especial detenimiento. Así, el antecesor más cercano al genio cervantino comenzó el camino hacia una nueva narrativa, consumada en 1615 con la publicación de la segunda parte del ingenioso hidalgo. También se analizarán, a partir de la comparación entre las dos partes del Quijote y la primera del Guzmán, los rasgos narrativos, estructurales y textuales por los que ambas creaciones deben considerarse modernas.

When it comes to consider don Quixote as the first modern novel, hardly is it taken into consideration the fact that just a year before, Mateo Alemán had published the first part of Guzmán de Alfarache, a creation which was so far from the fiction prose known until that moment, and which was read by Cervantes with a special interest. Thus, the nearest precedent to the Cervantine genius started the path towards a new narrative model, which reached its peak in 1615 with the publication of the ingenious gentleman’s second part. Moreover, the narrative, structural and textual aspects will be analysed from the comparison between the two parts of don Quixote and the first one of the Guzmán, in order to understand why both creations should be considered modern.
