Abstract
This article analyses the role of the naval system of Cartagena de Indias during the eight
teenth century, especially the elements related to its financing and supply needs.
Cartagena was the most important naval base in the southern Caribbean, and this
made it necessary to deploy a coastguard system that was capable of curbing smuggling
and, at the same time, reinforcing coastal surveillance
