Abstract
Western and far-Eastern lexicography differ in their origin and conception. With the globalization,
many lexicographical trends tend to expand across the world. However, there are
some attitudes and technological differences between West and East, mainly those concerning
the use of pocket electronic dictionaries
The research published on this paper analyzes those divergences and tries to explain them
according to the different historical tradition of dictionaries, as well as the sociological and
educational backgrounds. Particular attention is granted to Japan, the leader in quality handheld
electronic dictionaries, and China. Surveys were conducted among Japanese and Chinese
students, and four pocket electronic dictionaries were examined in detail.
