Tres nuevas pinturas de Juan Antonio de Frías y Escalante

Abstract

Trata este artículo de tres nuevas pinturas de Antonio Frías y Escalante que amplían su rico catálogo en colecciones privadas madrileñas: dos Inmaculadas y un Camino del Calvario, firmadas y fechadas. A través de las mismas se formula la influencia de Van Dyck en las composiciones y de Tiziano en la ejecución técnica sin olvidar lo propio suyo en el tratamiento de las tintas azules y claras. Especial atención se apunta en la pintura de flores en que hace gala de sus facultades para este género tan cultivado fundamentalmente por Arellano, quien tendría un competidor más que notable en el maestro que nos ocupa, de haberse dedicado a esta modalidad tan exigua en la pintura española.

This article about three new paintings by Antonio Frías y Escalante extends his precious catalogue at private collections of Madrid: two canvases with the Inmaculate and one more with the Carrying of the Cross, signed and dated. Through these paintings is shown that he is influenced by Van Dyck in the compositions, by Tiziano in the technique and that he has his own way in the blues and lightened colours. Special attention is given to the flowers. Escalante shows faculties for the floral painting, a genre so cultivated by Arellano. He could have been a great master on flower painting if he should cultivate this genre so exiguous in Spanish painting.
