Es segura la existencia de un grupo de artistas asentado en Benavente en los comienzos del siglo XVI que abastecía las demandas de iglesias de la zona y de particulares que encargaban obras de temática religiosa para sus fundaciones o capillas. Entre estos pintores se encuentran Cornielis de Holanda y otros anónimos, a los que se denomina "Maestro de Villafáfila" y "Maestro de Valdescorriel".
