El español de América en los archivos de la Inquisición: Nueva España 1527-1635

Abstract

This article discusses a select sub-sample of those who testified before the Holy Office established in New Spain in 1571. The data appear in El Abecedario, a manuscript bound in Mexico at the beginning of the 18th century. This rare volume is part of the Special Collection of the Huntington Library and contains an inventory in a lax alphabetical and chronological order, which has been used by historians to reconstruct the life of Sephardic Jews in New Spain. The select sample includes 200 subjects (1527-1635) of a total sample of831. This information supports the theory of koineization of New World Spanish inasmuch as the subjects were from diverse peninsular regions as well as from villages, towns and cities, and intermingled with Spanish speakers born in the New World colonies, other residents, and Spanish Jews expelled to Portugal and repatriated into Spain. The subjects are also Afro-Hispanics or Europeans from Lutheran and Calvinist nations. Photos included.

Este artículo presenta una muestra selecta de los comparecientes ante el Tribunal del Santo Oficio establecido en la Nueva España en 1571. Los datos aparecen en el manuscrito conocido como El Abecedario. encuadernado en México a principios del siglo XVIII. El rarísimo volumen pertenece a la Colección Especial de la Biblioteca Huntington y contiene un inventario en orden alfabético y cronológico no muy estricto. El manuscrito ha servido a historiadores para reconstruir la vida de los sefarditas en la Nueva España. La muestra selecta comprende 200 sujetos (1527-1635) de una muestra total de 831. Esta información respalda la temía de la koineización del español de América, puesto que los sujetos provienen tanto de diversas regiones de España como de aldeas, pueblos y ciudades, hispanohablantes que convivieron con los nacidos en las colonias americanas, residentes diversos y judíos españoles expulsados a Portugal y repatriados en España. Los sujetos de son también afrohispanos y europeos de naciones luteranas o calvinistas. Se incluyen fotos.
