El objetivo de este trabajo es hacer una reflexión sobre el tratamiento que el mundo rural del siglo XIV ha tenido en la historiografía castellana desde finales de los años 60 del siglo XX hasta la actualidad. Se parte del momento en que la investigación veía en la Peste Negra la causa primordial de la crisis para llegar, tras diversos cambios en las líneas de interpretación, a las nuevas tendencias que ven en el factor mercado la mejor explicación a los cambios de la producción agraria del siglo XIV. El resultado obtenido no es muy alentador. Hoy por hoy, el mundo rural de esta crítica centuria, al menos para el ámbito castellano, sigue presentando muchas lagunas. Precisamente para remediarlo, las últimas tendencias historiográficas proponen retomar la cuestión utilizando el modelo regional como marco. Este trabajo termina con una breve exposición sobre cómo se ha usado el singular caso de Andalucía y cuáles pueden ser las posibilidades de una investigación futura.
The goal of this work is to offer an insight into how the rural world in the XIVth century has traditionally been perceived in Castilian historiography from the end of the 1960s to the present day. We start out from the time when the Black Death was deemed to be the main cause of the crisis and, after various interpretations, reach the point where new trends view the market factor as the key to explaining the changes in XIVth century agricultural production. The findings that emerge are by no means encouraging. Today, the rural world in that critical century, at least for Castile, still leaves many questions unanswered. With a view to resolving this, recent historiographical research proposes an approach to the issue adopting the regional model as a framework of reference. This paper concludes with a short overview of how the particular case of Andalusia has been used and points the way to possible future research.
