La colonia romana de Flaviobriga y su territorium

Abstract

Flaviobriga (Castro-Urdiales, Cantabria) became in Roman times (probably in AD 74) a colonia (*Samanum portus ubi nunc Flaviobrica colonia, Pliny the Elder NH 4. 110). We neither discuss here what kind of colonia could be nor the exactly place of the *Samanum portus. The main purpose is the systematic search of information that can help to know more about the area, hierarchy and resources of the territorium (i. e. the urban center plus the ager). As the urban center has be en researched by one of us in his doctoral thesis, the intention is to advance a still very hypothetic model of the ager which is mainly based upon archaeological and toponymical inferences along with juridical epigraphy. The present first part is devoted to the municipal jurisdiction of Castro-Urdiales and includes the presentation of a new Roman inscription. A second article will treat about other spaces that could be involved into the territorium of Flaviobriga and will present some general conclusions.

Gracias a Plinio el Viejo (NH IV, 110) sabemos que Flaviobriga (Castro-Urdiales, Cantabria) llegó a ser colonia en la Antigüedad (*Samanum portus ubi nunc Flaviobrica colonia), probablemente en el año 74 d.C. Dejando a un lado la discusión acerca de qué tipo de colonia pudo ser y también evitando entrar en polémicas sobre la situación del *Samanum portus, el presente trabajo se centra, no sin antes ocuparse de las breves menciones en la investigación moderna al posible territorium de Flaviobriga, en la sistemática búsqueda de datos que logren clarificar la extensión, jerarquía y recursos de dicho territorium entendido como la suma del núcleo urbano y su ager correspondiente. El interés principal en esta ocasión ha sido la investigación del ager, sobre el cual se presenta una reconstrucción todavía muy hipotética, basada fundamentalmente en evidencias arqueológicas y toponímicas. El uso de la epigrafía jurídica y de otros datos de diversa índole ha sido igualmente de gran provecho. La presente primera parte está dedicada al estudio del término municipal de Castro-Urdiales, que incluye la presentación de un nuevo epígrafe de época romana. Un segundo trabajo se ocupará de otros espacios que pudieron estar incluidos en el territorium de Flaviobriga y de extraer las conclusiones pertinentes.
