Facultad de Filosofía y Letras K1 Naomi Mitchison K1 We have been Warned K1 5701.11 Enseñanza de Lenguas AB In her novel We have been Warned (1935), Naomi Mitchison shows a very forward-looking perspective on the topics of abortion, birth control, multiple-partner relationships, and rape. In order to demonstrate this, I will analyse the general social, literary, and political context of early twentieth-century Britain, as well as Mitchison’s life and novel, to later connect and compare them with the fragments of the novel that deal with the topics mentioned above, and that include the most outstanding elements. Thus, I will prove that Mitchison, through her novel, conveyed a message of open sexuality and female liberation that was far more progressive than her contemporary 1930s society and our twenty-first century one; and, in addition, I will expose the need to rediscover revolutionary yet forgotten female British writers such as Mitchison.
