Thesis aims to present the main characteristics that make Frank McCourt’s autobiographical novel ‘Tis: A Memoir (1999) one of the best examples of a twentieth- century Irish diasporic novel. In order to prove this theory, I describe the terms ‘diaspora’ and ‘the Irish diaspora’ and present an overview of the nineteenth and twentieth century Irish diasporas in the United States from a historical point of view. Then, I show the main features of the literary Irish diaspora of both centuries and their main differences. Finally, I analyze McCourt’s novel to prove that it covers the main characteristics of twentieth-century Irish diasporas – a realistic approach to his past life in Ireland and in the United States and a new sense of Irishness – although it still has some features of nineteenth- century literary diasporas and also some peculiarities with regards to those of the twentieth-century.
